What is the role of gel alcohol in the fight against COVID-19?

How it works:


Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) acts as a disinfectant and antiseptic, acting on the protein and lipid denaturation of pathogenic microorganisms that may be deposited on the surfaces of objects and the skin itself.

Studies show that the most effective concentration against microorganisms is 70%, close values below or above this (60 - 80%) also show satisfactory results.

This is because there is a need for a percentage of water in the composition of this product so that alcohol evaporation is not immediate, a fact that would reduce the effectiveness in lysing the structure of the pathogen.

In addition, it is through this water that alcohol is taken into the bacteria, virus or fungus.

Regarding COVID-19, the use of 70% alcohol gel is a WHO recommendation. It should be noted that one should not produce the alcohol gel itself, since the resulting concentration may not be necessary to act as a germicide, making the individual susceptible to contamination.

It is also recommended to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water – soaps, detergents or soaps – frequently.

These compounds have polar and non-polar composition, thus, the non-polar part, with affinity for lipids, binds to the pathogen through its cell membrane.

While the polar end, with affinity for water, interacts with it allowing the microorganism to be removed from the surface of the skin and be carried away by the water itself.
